How Listening Clubs Work

How to start and run a podcast listening club: finding members, picking a format, choosing episodes and leading discussion.

A listening club is a small group that listens to the same podcast episode, then meets to talk about it. Here’s how to set one up and keep it going.

1. Find your people

Three to eight people works well. Enough for different views, few enough for everyone to talk. Ask friends, neighbors, colleagues or an existing group chat. Details in how to start a club.

2. Pick a format

  • In person: a living room, café or library meeting room.
  • Online: a video call for scattered friends.
  • Asynchronous: a group chat thread where people post thoughts over a week.
  • Workplace: a lunch session around an episode on a work-related theme.

3. Set a rhythm

Every two to four weeks suits most groups. Keep each pick to one episode, or a short series for keen clubs.

4. Choose episodes

Rotate who picks, or vote from a shortlist. Mix genres. See how to choose an episode.

5. Run the discussion

Open with first reactions, move to deeper questions, end with what people will take away. Our discussion guide template gives you questions for any episode.

6. Keep it going

  • Keep a shared list of past picks and favorites
  • Invite a new member now and then
  • Try a theme month: true stories, science, history, comedy
  • Let people skip a session without guilt

Good club habits

Listen with an open mind. Let quieter people speak first. Disagree about ideas, not people. And when someone recommends a show outside the club, try it.
